A market where product information can be checked

A shopper choosing between two jackets, a buyer assessing a new supplier, or an inspector checking a product may all need to rely on information provided by different organisations across a supply chain. Verida is working towards a market where that information can be checked more easily and independently.

Product information is spread across the supply chain

A garment reaching a European shelf may have passed through spinning, dyeing, weaving and finishing across several companies and countries. Each organisation holds part of the product record, often in different systems and formats. Bringing that information together and checking it requires significant manual effort, and the cost often lands hardest on the smallest firms in the chain.

Fragmented records: No single actor holds a product's full lifecycle record, making information difficult to assemble and share consistently.

Difficult to verify: A PDF certificate can be difficult to authenticate independently or check for later changes.

Duplicated effort: Brands, auditors and authorities often request and verify similar information from the same suppliers multiple times.

What changes when product information can be independently verified

When product information can be linked to its issuer and checked for integrity, using EBSI as a shared trust layer, organisations across a supply chain can rely less on repeated document exchanges and manual verification.

Information issued once, such as a dyehouse certificate, could be reused by different buyers, auditors or authorities, while allowing them to check where it came from and whether it has changed. This can help reduce duplicated effort while giving manufacturers greater control over how product information is shared.

For consumers and other users of a Digital Product Passport, it can also make relevant product information easier to access and assess.

Verida: product passports for manufacturers

Verida is piloting how manufacturers can structure, share and verify product information for Digital Product Passports, and how EBSI can provide a shared trust layer between organisations that may not already have a direct relationship. The project is being developed by Onit Smart, part of Gruppo Onit, together with Clust-ER Create. Pilots are running with Italian textile and fashion manufacturers, with textiles among the priority product groups identified under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation.

EBSI provides timestamping for selected information, while Verida manages the wider product passport experience, including the data model, issuing workflow, access to information and interfaces used by companies and consumers. Product data remains with the organisations responsible for it. Only a fingerprint of the data, is anchored through EBSI.

Verida is designed to work alongside existing ERP, PLM and traceability systems rather than replace them, and does not act as a certification body. Onit Smart is an accredited EBSI Trusted Issuer, and its CEO co-signed CEN CWA 18291:2025 on textile Digital Product Passports.
